The number of registered nurses (RNs) employed in Minnesota's acute care hospitals increased 20 percent from 2002 to 2008. The ratio between full-time and part-time RNs changed over the six-year period. In 2002, 72.9 percent of RNs were employed as part-time, while in 2008, the percentage decreased to 48.8 percent.
Clinical staff includes employees such as physicians, nurses, lab technicians and pharmacists. These employees work most directly with patient care. Non-clinical staff includes personnel such as dietary, housekeeping, security, medical records and administration.

The number of RN full-time equivalents (FTEs) per adjusted day has trended upward, increasing by 0.24 from 2002 through 2007. There was then a decrease of 0.06 between the years of 2007 and 2008.
